9501. Synology Overview
NAS and Synology

Use Synology NAS to setup a private cloud at home.

1. Network Attached Storage

1.1 What is NAS?

A Network-attached storage(NAS) system is a storage device connected to a network that allows storage and retrieval of data from a centralized location for authorized network users and heterogeneous clients. NAS systems are flexible and scale-out, meaning that as you need additional storage, you can add on to what you have. NAS is like having a private cloud in the office. It’s faster, less expensive and provides all the benefits of a public cloud on site, giving you complete control.

1.2 What Can You Do With a NAS?

  • Backing Up Your Devices
  • Stream Movies Like Your Own Netflix
  • Running Your Own Cloud Storage
  • Running Virtual Machines

1.3 Options When Choosing a NAS

  • A NAS System from Known Manufacturers: Synology, QNAP, etc.
  • Using an External Hard drive Plugged into a Router
  • Using an Old Computer with FreeNAS

1.4 Synology vs QNAP

The software from Synology easier to use than the QNAP software. QNAP, on the other hand, often has better hardware for the price. It’s something you will have to choose between, software or hardware. For beginners, Synology is the better choice. For more advanced users, QNAP is a good choice.

2. Synology
